The Destruction of Hard Alley

During the War with the Faction, many parts of Hard Alley were burned down or destroyed.  Spirit Eleonara did a series of pictures showcasing the destruction...

First Strike:  City Hall
The Burning of the Brothel
Random Destruction
Attack on the Strip Club
The Fall of Lynden Labs

The end of Hard Alley brings with it many questions... What will happen next?  How will Hard Alley recover?  Is there a future for Hard Alley?

The answers to these questions is coming... soon.

Why Do Things Have to Change?

Big changes are coming to Hard Alley.

But why?

I've been getting that question a lot lately.  That, and things like, "Why do things have to change?  Why can't you just leave things as they are?  What's going to happen to my favorite spot?"

The basic answer is that we have to change or close, and I'd prefer not to close.

Hard Alley just celebrated its 8th Anniversary in July.  What began as something new and different and original in SL is now looking very old and common.  When we started, Hard Alley was the first and only dirty urban RP sex sim.  Now, you can't swing a dead meeroo without hitting one.

The basic answer is that Hard Alley is not exciting anymore and no one comes to play.

So I had a choice.  I could close the sim.  After all, 8 years is something to be proud of, right?  Very few places in SL have lasted that long.  I could close the sim and relax for the first time in 8 years and no longer have the stress of running a sim and trying to keep people entertained.

Or I could change the Alley and try to make it fun and interesting again and give people something they can enjoy.

Honestly... closing was looking like the best option.  After all, rebuilding the sim in all-mesh might make it look as good as some other sims, but it wouldn't change the fact that it would just be one of dozens of dirty urban sex sims.  I was very much less than enthused about that idea.

I had been thinking about ways I could change things to make it fun and different again, but it was just too much effort and would have been too difficult to make it work.

Then Jaimy Hancroft of Death Row Designs had an idea.

Her suggestion was very similar to what I had in mind, but her idea would work.  It wouldn't be as hard to do, and more importantly, she was volunteering to do all the mesh building herself!

I was excited again!  For the first time in years, I was excited about the potential that Hard Alley had to offer.  If we are able to pull this off, it will bring something new and different and fun back to Second Life and offer people a new reason to come enjoy Hard Alley again.

Of course, there are detractors.  The people who don't like change.  The ones who don't want me to change one thing or another.

I'm sorry, but things are changing.  They have to.  It's still going to be Hard Alley, but not like you know it.  Not every thing you love about Hard Alley will survive the change.

I will be brutally honest here.  The people coming around now and telling me not to change haven't come to play in Hard Alley in years.  Maybe if they HAD been here, we wouldn't have to change, but they haven't, and an empty sim doesn't pay the $295 a month in tier that the Linden's extort from me.

The people I am listening to are the ones who have been faithful and stuck with me through thick and thin.  The ones who have really shown their love for Hard Alley even in the bad times.

It will still be Hard Alley... kind of.  Just changed.

A New Year, A New Direction...

The year 2013 ended badly.  I had a costly series of repairs (washing machine, hot water heater, heater, new tires, new battery, etc) that burned up nearly $2,500 that I didn't have.  My wife was let go from her job just 4 days before Christmas.  Our son's cat was diagnosed with cancer (luckily he made it through Christmas, although he passed just last week).  And that was just Real Life stuff.  Shit happened in Second Life, too.

But 2014 is a new year and things are changing (at least in SL)!

I have more people helping out in the Alley, to take some of the load off me and to help give me some fresh ideas.  Jadelyn McAuley and Ryann Hendrassen are now Co-Managers of the Hard Core Sex and Strip Club.  Jackson Greycloak is their DJ Manager.  They've hired several new DJs and Strippers and are filling the schedule up and keeping the parties going.  They all have a lot of great things planned and it's going to be a lot of fun for everyone so I hope you all come out and party with us!

Jadelyn, Ryann, and Jackson
Hard Core also has a new look and a sex lounge area.  Everything is warmer and more inviting and, as always... anything goes!  Hard Core also has, courtesy of Spirit Eleonara, the newest Intan version 3 Couples Dance ball, full of hot dances and even hotter sex!

Hard Core Sex & Strip Club
There are major changes coming to the rest of Hard Alley as well!

The old Gang Bang Clubhouse is gone!  It's been bulldozed and replaced by a Seedy Motel, an underground Boiler Room, and a brand new Frat House.  You can rest assured that the horny guys of Delta Iota Kappa (DIK) will be partying hard with the girls of the Reform School (and any other girls that happen to wander too close).

DIK Frat House and the Hard Luck Motel
Thanks to some generous donations from some of SL's best designers, there are a lot of other brand new mesh sex items replacing the old prim ones.  New sex bleachers in the Reform School Gym, new Office Cubicles in Lynden Labs, and a new Meth Lab in the Boiler Room.  These are just a few of the changes that have been made already, and we have much more planned for 2014.

As always, if it's in Hard Alley, you can probably fuck on it.
Roleplaying is getting a boost as well.  We'll be continuing the Hard Alley vs Faction war and NOTHING is scripted or pre-planned, so ANYTHING can happen and I'm excited to see how it all unfolds.  We'll be working to get RP started in several other areas of the Alley as well.

Hard Alley Roleplaying
The Hard Alley website will be getting a whole new look to it as well!  A professional web designer has volunteered her services to re-do the site completely and bring it up to date!  It will be THE place to go to get the latest schedule of Hard Alley events and RP information.  Look for more on this major change very soon!

There have been some personal changes for me as well in this new year.  Some of you have already noticed that after 2 years Naiya and I broke up just before Christmas.  While all break ups are rough, Naiya has found new happiness and I wish her the best.  Nai and I remain good friends, and she will still be coming around the Alley occasionally.

And that brings me to the biggest change in my SL...  Spirit Eleonara.  Many of you already know Spirit from Hard Alley where she DJs and runs the Brothel and the popular Seams and Dreams Burlesque Show.  Some of you may know her from her amazing photography work on Flickr and on her own blog "Images from... the Spirit World".  Spirit has been of invaluable help to me around the Alley over the last few years, and for the last year she was also a beloved Pet to Naiya and I.

With all the changes that have occurred in the last month, Spirit and I have grown even closer and have realized just how much we care for each other.  I love Spirit, and she loves me... despite that fact that I'm a completely rotten bastard.  *grins*  I am hers and she is mine.

Spirit and Hard
2014 is going to be a great year at Hard Alley.  I hope you are all there with us.

I got banned from a club the other night.

I've always looked at Banning as something you do to griefers who are dropping particle bombs or orbiting other players or using scripted objects to harass people.

I have almost never used banning for personal reasons.  Maybe once or twice in the 7 years I've been running Hard Alley.  Anyone that knows me, knows that it takes a hell of a lot to piss me off enough that I'd do something like that.  I have occasionally banned guys who were threatening my dancers.

But, 99% of the time, I only ban people that violate one of the three rules of Hard Alley:  1) People playing underage avatars or are looking for underage sex, 2) People who use weapons against others in a non-roleplaying manner, and 3) People who are complete dicks that are only there to harass other players.  Even in those cases, I usually attempt to resolve the issue peacefully in IMs before resorting to banning.  I insist all of my Security personnel follow these strict, non-confrontational methods as well.

The other night, my lovely wife, Naiya, and our beautiful Pet, Spirit, dragged me out of the Alley to a club they wanted to visit.  I don't enjoy leaving the Alley.  It almost always results in disappointment in what I see SL has become.  But I don't want Naiya and Spirit to feel trapped with me in my old sim, so I sometimes go out with them.

They teleported me to a lounge style club with a lot of people crowded into a relatively small space.  This place is obviously quite popular.  Everyone was grey for the majority of my short visit there.  The color I could see consisted of a lot of purple.  However, I never hold lag against anyone.  I've had my own site long enough to realize lag is something you really cannot control.  I cranked my graphics down to minimum and followed Nai and Spirit into the middle of the crowd.

It was a very pretty shade of purple.

We stood there for a few minutes letting things and people rezz and noticed that absolutely no one was talking.  No one bothered to greet us (something I always try to do as host of my own club when I am there.  It doesn't take any time, and it lets people know you appreciate them coming).  Nai and Spirit and I were on Skype, so conversing amongst ourselves was easy and there was no need for us to use Local Chat or even IMs.  But what's the fun in that?  We could stand silently at Hard Alley and talk in Skype just as easy!  We came to this place to meet new people and have some fun!

So Spirit "sneezed" in local chat.  I replied, "Bless you," followed by, "/me hands Spirit a tissue."

We didn't realize it then, but we were taking our first steps to being shown the Exit.

I'm sorry, but at Hard Alley, we talk in Local.  It's how we have fun and enjoy each other's company.  It's how we get to know people.  It keeps things interesting and allows others to join in and be part of things if they desire.

So Spirit, Naiya and I started talking in local.  Some of it was silly, because we can be silly at times, but nothing was offensive or rude to anyone there, nor were we saying anything rude or offensive about the club.  I might have made a remark about Canadians, but I don't think the population of Canada lost one bit of sleep over anything I said.  After a few minutes, one other person spoke up and started talking with us.  He was from Texas.  He was friendly and we were having fun talking with him.  Yay!  We broke the ice!

Thing are starting to rezz!  This might not be so bad after all...

One other person joined in, in a friendly way, and we thought we had a great thing going.  Then one other guy spoke up and was rude and insulting from the beginning.  He made several comments to Spirit, prompting her to say, "oh, I am I not supposed to talk?  I shall zip it if that is the case."  Naiya replied, "I think we are disturbing the force here seems local chat conversations don't happen unless fully provoked over and over."  The guy being a jerk then commented that Spirit was being retarded.

Then I see this:

[22:09] Ms. Angel Cakes left the region.

Naiya was banned without warning.

Spirit asked, "Why was my friend ejected?  I am confused." to which the rude guy replied, "your probly next for being stupid."

Then Spirit was banned.

I left in disgust.  I am sure I was in the process of being banned as well.  It does not matter if I actually was or not.  I will never return to that place.

Naiya asked the owner why she was banned.  The owner accused her of being a troll because she insinuated that her club was full of people that don't talk.  They WEREN'T talking.  If the owner is THAT sensitive to being thought of as a club where no one talks, you'd think she wouldn't BAN the people who try to get people TALKING!

I talked to a good friend of the club's owner.  I sent her a notecard of the entire local chat session.  She herself could not understand why we were banned.  Several other people from the club IM'd us after and shared their sympathy and disbelief.

A friend of ours was also banned from there the day before because his avatar was too tall.  We really could not believe that any club owner would ban for such a ridiculous reason.

We believe it now.

Obviously, the owner of a site is free to ban people as they see fit, even if they are an insane ban nazi.

Come to Hard Alley.  You can talk in Local.  Please don't make me leave Hard Alley again.  I have just about lost my faith in SL humanity.

For those of you who would like a copy of the Local Chat notecard, just IM me in game and you can Judge for yourself if we should have been banned or not.  If you want to know the name of club, just select and hi-lite the text here -->  Teqi's Lounge

By the way, we were ASKED by the offending club's owner to spread the word of this incident to our friends....

[2013/09/24 22:24] Ms. Spirit H. Demure (spirit.eleonara): If you actually got to know people before just kicking them out of your club, that might be a good thing.  But...NOW I will tell everyone I know...which is quite a lot of people....NOT to go to your club, because of how you abuse your power.  You may not think it a big deal, but you may find that you get less and less people.
[2013/09/24 22:24] Teqi Falta: yes, tell to your friend, less work for me

[2013/09/24 22:24] Teqi Falta: i dont need shit in the club

See?  We're only doing what she wants!  :)
